Not only that, of course. He didn't really try to halt the project
AFAIK, he just blanked the web site. But it was the last straw, if
anything. The main reasons were his lack of openness, unwillingness to
discuss new directions, and unwillingness to share powers with others
in the community even when he was AWOL for months.
