Beats in what respect?  Certainly not user interface or ease of use.
Although I'm an ex-ArtWorks user of years-gone-by, Inkscape's UI always
felt bizarre and arbitrary to me.

On my AMD64 box, the performance of the two is pretty close too.  I'd
guess Xara LX has the edge.

It does appear that it was never Xara's intention to release the CDraw
sources, which is a shame, yes.
